In their first CD collaboration, the singer hailed by director Trevor Nunn as a "thrilling and rare talent" and the songwriter hailed by Variety as "exciting, innovative and altogether inspiring" have joined forces to create a solo album with its roots in theatre but with a vibrant pop sensibility. Featuring songs from all three of Brown's stage shows (The Last Five Years, Parade, Songs for a New World), the CD also includes the world premiere of four new songs, and taps a variety of styles, from rock to gospel, from country to swing, from theatre to art song.

The San Francisco Chronicle cheered, "Kennedy gives each song its full weight with her lustrous voice and dramatic presence. Brown couldn't dream of a better musical partner." The Dallas Morning News called it "wonderful … Kennedy sings with a vibrant freedom that makes this music memorable and endearing." The Detroit News, who felt Jason "could make a mint as a pop writer if he was so inclined," also thought he was "lucky to get Lauren Kennedy - her smooth voice easily moves between moods and injects meaning into Brown's lyrics." And the Philadelphia Daily News found the CD "an excellent showcase for this fresh, pop-minded musical theater composer. Grade: A."
